Music alone has an incredible power to make changes. It can slow a heart rate, lower anxiety, improve mood, help create social connections and much more.
It has been scientifically shown that music crosses multiple regions of the brain and creates neural pathways which can be of benefit to many individuals including those with: developmental delays; speech and language problems; cerebral palsy; autism spectrum disorder; intellectual, physical or emotional disabilities.
Central Coast Music Therapy caters for individuals of all ages and abilities and no previous musical experience is required. We are a registered NDIS provider.
Central Coast School Holiday Program
Day 1 – Beginner (2 hours)
Using a range of materials including rice, pasta, beads, bottles, and plastic eggs; we will be exploring how size and quantity create changes in pitch (highs and lows), dynamics (louds and softs), and tone (quality of sound produced).
In making the: shaker | maraca | ocean drum
We will be working on hand-eye coordination, gross and fine motor skills, and impulse control. After creating the instruments participants will have the opportunity to engage in music therapy interventions that involve their own creation to create interpersonal connections, opportunities to communicate and work on group behaviours.
Day 2 – Intermediate (2.5 hours)
The instruments created during day 2 add a layer of complexity to those of day 1.
Through the creation of a: thunder drum | cabasa
Participants will be working on their cognitive skills of perception, recognition, discrimination, and categorization. Following the completion of the instruments, a range of music therapy interventions will be engaged in including musical storytelling, improvisation, and active music making.
Day 3 – Advanced (3 hours)
On day 3 participants will be making a ukulele from a kit. This process will work on decision-making skills, problem-solving skills as well as providing a sense of accomplishment with the completion of their instrument. Once the ukuleles are constructed the opportunity to learn a few songs will be given, so they can take it home and show off their new skills. Day 3 will also include a collaboration with the other participants to write a song as a group to be played on their ukuleles.
